Wildcard Coco Vandeweghe moved into the second round of the San Diego Open by edging out Sofia Kenin 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 at the Barnes Tennis Centre on Monday.
Vandeweghe, ranked No 143, will face No 4 seed Jessica Pegula next.
