Italian Jasmine Paolini reached the last 16 of the Transylvania Open by Verdino by edging out Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 6 seed, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday evening.
Paolini, ranked No 78, will face Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska next.
