Medvedev to lose No 1 spot – either Nadal, Alcaraz or Ruud will be top after US Open
The No 1 ranking is within Rafael Nadal’s grasp once again. Here’s what the Spaniard must do in New York to claim it.
It has been talked about since the US Open draw was released. With Daniil Medvedev defending 2,000 champion points in Flushing Meadows, and Rafael Nadal playing in Queens for the first time since 2019, and therefore defending zero points, the Spaniard was in the driver’s seat to reclaim the No 1 ranking.
Now that Medvedev has been ousted by Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 it is official: Daniil Medvedev will drop from No.1 in the ATP rankings on the Monday after the US Open.
Three players – Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud – all have a chance to reach No 1.
How Nadal can reach No 1
For Nadal the equation is relatively simple. Here’s how he gets to No 1:
- If he reaches the final
- If he reaches the quarter-final, and Alcaraz or Ruud don’t win the title
- If he loses in the round of 16, and Alcaraz or Ruud don’t reach the final.
Alcaraz can reach No.1 if:
- He wins the title.
- Nadal does not reach the quarter-finals and he loses to the final to someone other than Ruud.
Ruud can reach No.1 if:
- He wins the title and Nadal doesn’t reach the final.
- Nadal doesn’t reach the quarter-final and he loses in the final to someone other than Alcaraz.
Nadal – 210 weeks?
If Nadal emerges at the top of the ATP rankings after the US Open, he’ll hold the top spot for the ninth time and begin his 210th week.
Here are the top 10 players on the ATP Tour, in terms of weeks at No 1:
- Djokovic 373 weeks
- Federer 310 weeks
- Sampras 286 weeks
- Lendl 270 weeks
- Connors 268 weeks
- Nadal 209 weeks
- McEnroe 170 weeks
- Borg 109 weeks
- Agassi 101 weeks
- Hewitt 80 weeks
Medvedev is currently in his second stint and 16th week at No 1.
