Wimbledon quarter-finalist Niemeier advances to US Open fourth round; Swiatek next
Jule Niemeier won against Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 7-6 (5) on Saturday to advance to the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career
Until Wimbledon this year, 23-year-old Jule Niemeier had never won a Grand Slam main draw singles match. Now, she is through to the second week at a Major for the second Slam in a row.
After reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, Niemeier, ranked No 108 in the world, advanced to the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday with a straight sets win over China’s Qinwen Zheng.
Niemeier needed one hour and 50 minutes to beat Zheng 6-4, 7-6 (5) and set up a last 16 clash against world No 1 Iga Swiatek.
The German is having an impressive run in New York. She had earlier defeated American wildcard Sofia Kenin (7-6 (3), 6-4) and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva (6-4, 6-3) in the tournament.
