Venus Williams goes down to Swiss Jil Teichmann in Toronto first round
While sister Serena Williams scored her first singles win in 14 months on Monday, sister Venus Williams will have to wait a bit longer after a first round exit in Toronto
American tennis star Venus Williams was knocked out of the National Bank Open on Tuesday early morning by Swiss Jil Teichmann in a first round match that started just 15 minutes before midnight.
With rains delaying play earlier in the day, it was 11-45 PM local time when 42-year-old Venus Williams and 25-year-old Jil Teichmann took to the court.
An hour and 15 minutes later, Teichmann, ranked No 21 in the world, walked away a 6-3, 6-3 winner at the Aviva Centre in Toronto. She will next meet world No 2 Anett Kontaveit, who received a bye in the opening round, for a place in the last 16.
This was Venus’ second singles tournament since August last year – the first was a three-set loss to Rebecca Marino in Washington DC last week.
While sister Serena Williams scored her first win in 14 months on Monday, Venus will now be hoping to get her first win of the season in Cincinnati next week where she has received a wild card entry into the Western & Southern Open.
