Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, who shone during the grass court swing by winning back-to-back titles during a 12-match winning streak, was defeated in the first round of the San Jose Open by American Claire Liu on Tuesday night.
Liu, ranked No 79 in the world, won 6-2, 7-5 over Haddad Maia to set up a second round showdown against ninth seeded Russian Veronika Kudermetova.
