Second seed Matteo Berrettini, of Italy, moved into the semi-finals of the Swiss Open by beating Spain’s Pedro Martinez, the No 5 seed, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 at the Roy Emerson Arena in Gstaad on Friday.
The win extended his winning streak to 11 matches and sets up a mouth-watering clash with former US Open champion Dominic Thiem.
Berrettini won back-to-back titles on grass in Stuttgart and Queen’s Club before he had to pull out of Wimbledon after testing positive for COVID-19.
Thiem scored a straight sets win over Juan Pablo Varillas on Friday to reach his first semi-final on the ATP Tour since Madrid 2021.
Berrettini holds a 3-2 lead over Thiem in career meetings, having also won the last two clashes. Thiem has won their only meeting on clay, which came in the third round of the 2018 French Open
