Qualifier Pera picks up the title in Budapest
It was a career-first tour title for the American
Bernarda Pera in Budapest 2022 (Imago/Panoramic)
Bernarda Pera continued her 100 percent record over Aleksandra Krunic, defeating her this time 6-3, 6-3 to win the Hungarian Grand Prix.
This is the American’s first tour-level title, achieved at the age of 27, and she did it without dropping a set.
More than that, she did it by coming through qualifying.
Krunic was in her first-ever clay final, and had knocked out defending champion Yulia Putintseva in Saturday’s semi-final.
This was their first meeting on a clay court – both their previous matches had been on hard courts, in Guangzhou in 2018, with Pera winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-final, and in Moscow last year, when she got a 7-6 (3), 6-3 first-round victory.
