Niemeier sets up all-German Wimbledon quarter-final, ends Watson’s dreams
Jule Niemeier defeated Heather Watson 6-2, 6-4 on Sunday and will face German Tatjana Maria in the next round
German Jule Niemeier reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon by winning against Heather Watson 6-2, 6-4 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Sunday.
Niemeier, ranked No 97, will face German Tatjana Maria next.
The 22-year-old is the fourth youngest German woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals in the Open era – older only than Bettina Bunge, Steffi Graf and Sabine Lisicki.
In the previous rounds, the 22-year-old German beat Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-1, 6-4), Estonian Anett Kontaveit, the second seed (6-4, 6-0) and Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).
Watson, ranked No 121, won against German Tamara Korpatsch (6-7 (7), 7-5, 6-2), Chinese Qiang Wang (7-5, 6-4) and Slovenian Kaja Juvan (7-6 (6), 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
