Nadal’s coach Moya: “His greatest achievement, if Rafa wins today”

With 21 Grand Slam titles already under his belt, there are plenty of achievements to pick from when looking to highlight Rafael Nadal’s greatest ever.

His coach Carlos Moya, however, thinks that if he beats Casper Ruud in today’s Roland-Garros final, that would be the best win of his career.

“If he wins, in my opinion it’s the title that deserves the most credit in his entire career,” he told L’Equipe. “Well, when I look at the one in Australia this year, it was also beyond anything. Both of them are at the top. The preparation for the Australian [Open] was nothing. And here, [he had] even less! But this is the clay, this is Roland[-Garros], and with Rafa, anything can happen. If he were to win, I would put this one, maybe, ahead of the Australian Open.”

Moya also had some words of reassurance for those concerned about Nadal’s physical condition and his future in tennis.

“Honestly, I’m positive, but I don’t have all the answers,” he said. “I’m not surprised [by his run at Roland-Garros], I know what he’s capable of doing to survive in the worst conditions, I know the resilience that he has. This tournament has proved it again. Of course, in the last two matches, he was very close to losing. But he survived.”
