Former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka, seeded No 15, defeated German Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 7-6 [3] to reach the third round of Roland-Garros in Paris on Wednesday.
Ranked No 15 in the world, Azarenka looked to be cruising after winning the first set. But Petkovic, a former top 10 player, went up an early break to lead 4-2 in the second set.
After Azarenka broke back for 4-4, Petkovic broke again and earned a set point on her own serve in the 10th game but the Belarusian fought back once again to take the second set into a tiebreak, which she won comfortably.
The Belarusian will next meet 23rd seed Jil Teichmann, of Switzerland, who scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Olga Danilovic.
