Carlos Alcaraz: “I think I’m ready to win a Grand Slam”
The 19-year-old Spaniard is high on confidence after his victory in Madrid
Newly crowned Madrid champion Carlos Alcaraz says he feels he’s “ready to win a Grand Slam” after winning a second Masters 1000 title of 2022 with a brilliant week in the Spanish capital.
The 19-year-old beat Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev on successive days to add Madrid to his Miami Masters victory and leave many wondering if he can emulate Nadal by winning the French Open at the same age in 2005.
In an interview with Tennis TV, Alcaraz could not keep the smile off his face when asked if he thought he could translate his success in the Masters 1000s to the biggest events of all, the Grand Slams.
“I think I’m ready to win a Grand Slam,” he said. “I think I’m ready to go for it. It’s a goal for me this year, to try to get my first Grand Slam. I’m going to work for it, let’s see what’s going to happen at Roland-Garros.”
With four titles in 2022, Alcaraz is second in the ATP Race, just behind Nadal, and with just the Rome Masters to go before Paris, the teenager is establishing himself as one of the favourites for the Roland-Garros title.
His best effort in a Grand Slam to date is a quarter-final run at last year’s US Open.
But wins in Rio, Miami, Barcelona and now Madrid have thrust Alcaraz into the limelight and his wins over Nadal and Djokovic, in particular, may just have put some doubt in the minds of those two.
