Top seed Zverev thumped by Danish teenager Rune in Munich

World No 3 Alexander Zverev suffered a shock defeat in the second round of the Munich Open on Wednesday, beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Danish teenager Holger Rune.

The top-seeded German took just one of his seven break points and was broken four times himself as Rune, who turns 19 on Friday and who is already ranked No 70, claimed the first top-10 win of his career so far.

“Difficult match against one of the best player in the world,” Rune said. “I didn’t expect to win this one in two sets, I’m very proud. I enjoyed the match, I tried to gave the audience a good match, thanks for the support. My birthday is on Friday, it’s a good gift. I’m so happy to be here.”

Rune will play either Emile Ruusuvuori of Finland or Frenchman Maxime Cressy in the quarter-finals.

After reaching the semi-finals on his clay-court season debut in Monte-Carlo, Zverev had been expected to perform well in an event he won in 2017 and 2018.

But Rune was the better player throughout and Zverev will now have to regroup ahead of next week’s Madrid Masters.
