Fruhvirtova impresses but Badosa proves too strong in Miami

16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova showed why she is considered as one of the most promising youngsters in the women’s game during her fourth-round clash with fifth seed Paula Badosa at the Miami Open on Monday evening.
The Czech teen displayed her powerful baseline game but came up against a stronger and more experienced player in Badosa, who scored a 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Miami Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career.
Fruhvirtova gets an early break in the second set but Badosa fights back to win in straight
Badosa started the match feeling unwell and had to get her blood pressure checked after the first few games. However, she went up a double break and won the first set 6-2, saving four break points on her serve.
In the second set, Fruhvirtova secured an early break to go up 2-0, raising hopes of a closer contest. But the Spaniard, who could end up as the new world No 2 in women’s tennis behind the new No 1 Iga Swiatek after Miami, held up her own against Fruhvirtova’s big groundstrokes and broke back.
Another break helped Badosa go up 4-2 and she then broke the Czech teen for one final time in the ninth game to complete the 6-2, 6-3 win on one hour and 22 minutes.
During her on-court interview, Badosa praised the young Fruhvirtova, calling her a ‘fearless player’ who will have a great future.
The win sets up a clash against 16th seeded American Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals. which will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.
With Badosa’s win, the women’s quarter-final line-up at the Miami Open has been set.
