Andrey Rublev survived a second-set wobble to beat Elias Ymer 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3) on Thursday and give the Russian Tennis Federation a 1-0 lead over Sweden in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup in Madrid.
The world No 5 ripped through the first set and led 5-3 in the second but faltered as world No 171 Ymer hit back to level. But Rublev snatched the final set on the tiebreak, 7-3, to secure a hard-earned victory
World No 2 Daniil Medvedev can wrap up victory if he beats Mikael Ymer in the second singles match later on Thursday.
Serbia will take on Croatia in the other semi-final.
