Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz completes field for ATP Finals

The race is over. Hubert Hurkacz became the eighth and final qualifier for this month’s ATP Finals in Turin when he beat Australia’s James Duckworth 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-5 to reach the semi-finals of the Paris Masters.

The Pole, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon this summer and who won his first Masters 1000 title in Miami in March, snatched the vital break at the end of the decider to complete the field.

“It’s a great achievement for me,” Hurkacz said. “I’m super happy about it. You dream about it as a kid. When you’re growing up you don’t know if it’s going to be possible, if you’re going to be good enough. Now, achieving this thing, it’s very big for me.”

Hurkacz went into the match under pressure, knowing that if he lost to world No 55 Duckworth, then Jannik Sinner and Cameron Norrie would have a chance to overtake him next week.

The Pole dominated the first set but looked nervous as Duckworth, coming forward more and more as the match wore on, levelled the match when he took the second-set tiebreak 7-4.

But Hurkacz served brilliantly in the third set and though Duckworth saved two match points on serve at 6-5 down, Hurkacz forced a third and clinched it when he lifted a deft lob over the advancing Duckworth.

Hurkacz joins Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud in the eight-man field for the ATP Finals, which will be played in Turin from November 14-21.
