Highly-rated teenager Lorenzo Musetti set up a clash with his slightly senior compatriot Jannik Sinner at the European Open in Antwerp.
The 19-year-old reached the round of 16 by getting past another Italian, Gianluca Mager, in two tough tiebreak sets, 7-6(2), 7-6(3).
And he will next play the 20-year-old Sinner, who had a bye in the first round.
Elsewhere in the same tournament, two Americans knocked out two seeds – Jenson Brooksby beat fifth seed Reilly Opelka, also of the USA, 6-4, 6-4, and Brandon Nakashima defeated an out-of-sorts sixth seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-0.
