SVITOLINA SHOCKER, SWIATEK SURGES
Fifth seed Elina Svitolina was the latest to fall in the women’s draw, losing to Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-2.
“It was really tough because also I didn’t know Elina that well – I never played her, I never practised her,” Krejcikova said afterwards. “So I didn’t really know. I wasn’t really sure what kind of ball I should expect, so I was a little bit, I think, that I didn’t know what to expect.
“I felt weird, but as…the match went on and I was playing and playing, I just started to feel better, and actually at the end I was just feeling really well and I was just going for my shots.”
It was a tricky first set for defending champion Iga Swiatek, but she came through against Anett Kontaveit, 7-6(4), 6-0. That means she has now won 20 sets in a row at Roland-Garros.
STEPHENS UPSETS MUCHOVA,
KENIN THROUGH
The Czech will next play former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who was the first woman to win on Saturday with the American scoring a 6-3, 7-5 win over 18th seed Karolina Muchova.
She already knew she would be joined in the last 16 by another American – and it will be fourth seed Sofia Kenin, who beat 28th seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
OTHER RESULTS
- Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk is through to the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time, beating Russia’s Varvara Gracheva 6-1, 6-2.
- In one of the week’s oddest scorelines, 25th seed Ons Jabeur beat Magda Linette 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
- Greece’s Maria Sakkari, seeded 17th, knocked out 14th seed Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-2.
- Coco Gauff progressed to the fourth round after Jennifer Brady was forced to retire from their match after the first set.
